Paint Party Friday: Week 29 Check-in

Welcome to Week 29 of Paint Party Friday!  Whether you've been with us from Week 1 or are joining us for the first time today, we're so happy you're here to share the joy of painting!

For the past couple of weeks we've talked a lot about pricing paintings and where to sell them. There have been great discussions and you have shared so many wonderful insights - Thank you all! Your comments raised some more questions and this week we are thinking about marketing.  Marketing and sales go hand-in-hand, yet they are vey different activities. This week we're wondering: How do you get your name and artwork seen by potential buyers?

Please make sure to use your post URL address NOT your blog address as there are many late visitors who get confused as to which post is for PPF when they arrive (after Friday) at your website. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Linky, an explanation of how this tool works can be found on Week 1 and Week 2 check-ins.

Have a great time at the party!

P.S. If you have a topic, you'd like to see turned into a PPF poll question, please email us your idea!

  8. how bizarre! i've just asked this exact question to an artist in Wales that I follow on twitter as she's been a full time artist for 18 mths and I wondered how other than online she gets her name known! This week I have nothing new for PPF so haven't linked but thought i'd pop over anyway and am so amazed at the poll question- i'd love if you could let us know successful ways to do this as the internet is saturated with artists offering pet portraits etc so getting 'noticed' is something I have no clue about!

  10. Thank you once again for your wonderful-ness in hosting these weekly fun fests! It's always a great time at these parties.

I think the best way to get yourself out there is to join contests in your area, donate a painting or two to charity, and mingle with other artists (carrying your business cards) whenever possible.

I'd like to learn how to frame my own work. I have no idea how to do this but would love to learn. I'm wondering if anyone here frames her own artwork and HOW.

  11. Thanks, for hosting. I agree with Scarlet, becoming a joiner: contests, facebook, blogs, doing shows, teaching classes, and getting out there yourself and mingling among people who enjoy art is the way to get known. Some people buy better from someone they feel they have connected with or whom they feel they can connect.

  13. I also have donated some art to charities..and it helps to attend town art fairs and just talk to business people who will hang my art in their business for awhile I have sold two paintings that way this summer

  16. I don't market my art currently, and am afraid I've never mastered the art of selling! I sure know how to buy! lol.

  17. I really love how you put the PPF logo in the mall pic, that is soooooo cool! I pretty much just rely on friends and word of mouth at work to sell my stuff. I really do need to work more at it on my blog and on Etsy. I have to admit I'm not too good in the promotion of my work. That's the part that is such a chore to me. I'd rather spend my free time painting, lol!Happy PPF everyone!

  18. I'm not too good at promoting either, I need to put some effort into it!

  19. Happy PPF! The art of marketing is one that takes as much skill as painting. Always trying to figure out the best way! Thx for the awesome link up...truly enjoy visiting everyone's blogs to check out what they've been up to! POP ART MINIS

  21. One of the things I have used successfully is a simple signature at the end of my emails and on the forums i frequent, "I paint beautiful watercolors" with a link to my blog.

  22. Need art time of which I'm short of lately.

  23. I'm still working to find what works. Most of my actual sales are through a antique & crafts mall. Some of my commissions have come through setting up at an artists show where I didn't sell enough to make my booth space, but picked a commission which led to three others. I have a website but haven't sold anything through it. I do sell some photos of my work printed on products over on Zazzle.

  24. Promoting?marketing is the biggest challenge for me. I just recently opened my Etsy shop and use both my blog and my facebook page for promoting it. I certainly need to get mor "aggressive" about this. BIG challenge.

  25. Sorry I wasn't able to get around to visit everyone much this past week... my brother got married (it was beautiful!) and then the rest of the week my family was sick :( Looking forward to catching up with everyone! Hope everyone's having a great Friday!!

  28. Ooooh I had no idea how to answer this weeks poll, I find it all a bit of a minefield to be honest, interesting to see everyone elses answers though, tfs Jenny

  29. So, marketing your art... Hmmm.... where to start. You see the thing is that I'm very good at promoting other people (being a marketing professional and all), but not very good at myself. I know I do a terrible job marketing my art. What's worse is that I know what I should be doing. I think the problem is a lack of belief in my own work. I'm a busy lady. I'm self employed and know that if I can earn £x an hour through writing work then that's guaranteed. I could spend hours on a marketing plan for my art but earn nothing.... But then again, if I never try....

  30. If I were smart I would hire a manager to do the marketing. I don't think that is fun!!!
I just love the picture you posted!!!

  31. Hi everyone! Love the photo! Thanks for hosting once again. Its always so much fun! Curious to read everyone's thoughts about getting your name out there. I am not a good marketer of myself! Happy PPF! :)

  32. just now trying the ETSY way to sell my work. Unfortunately I don't have enough free time to create and the few pieces I do manage to squeak out, I give away as gifts, or family and friends end up 'buying' them. Out of work for a few weeks with some surgeries, so I have had more time to focus on putting me out there. Would so love to swap my present 'pay the bills' job with creating! I need to drink a big glass of BELIEVE. Thank YOU Eva & Kristin for bringing us all togther!

  33. I'm glad to be back to PPF! Looking forward to seeing everyone's work this week.

Marketing myself.... hmmm. I'm kinda doing the passive marketing thing right now since I really don't push it but I do have my blog networked to my Facebook page. I have a webpage, but not much in the way of sales so I'm guessing the passive way is not a productive one.

This is a great poll question. I love reading what the other artists think about this subject.

  34. Hi! Love PPF. This is my second week and I am hooked! I have never sold or tried to sell a piece. I do get published in Somerset often, but my painting last week sparked lots of interest of FB! So, this week I am painting to sell. Kinda crazy!

  38. Hello again, everyone! So happy to be back and looking forward to seeing everyone's artwork this week! Mine is a bit underwhelming for my first week back -- It's a series of comics made in MS Paint. But, it's expressive!

    Happy PPF!

  39. Maybe art competitions? I know many you have to pay to join. If you win, I think you'd get it back? Select your best for these. :)
