Paint Party Friday: Week 35 Check-In


Welcome to week 35 at Paint Party Friday! It is fabulous to see new painters joining in every week! All painters are welcome here - no need for invitations, just jump in and show us what you've been painting this week, and spend a little time visiting with all the other fun painters while you're here.

Last week we enjoyed learning more about why you buy the art you buy and we hope you did too! It seems when we are charmed, we buy! This week we want to learn a little bit more about your creative process... We're wondering how, and with what, do you get your surface ready to paint?


Please make sure to use your post URL address NOT your blog home page URL address as there are many late visitors who get confused as to which post is for PPF when they arrive (after Friday) at your website.     sometimes i draw right on a blank surface, then paint it in - sometimes i put TONS of junk on a surface, then i paint on it... it all depends on how i am feeling :))

    Most times I gesso but have just used the canvas as is. It's been a while since I've used canvas and starting next year it will be canvas time. I want to do Van Gogh paintings, at least one a month. I'm looking forward to that. Happy Paint Party Friday everyone and have a great weekend.

    happy PPF! most of the time i use gesso, but i also like collaged surfaces.

    It depends what I'm painting and whether I'm using watercolour, oil or acrylics. Usually I buy already primed box canvasses and although I know there are techniques to stretching watercolour paper, I just paint directly on to the watercolour pads I use. Mostly I use indian ink so don't need to prep the paper for that either. Still so much to learn though and I love hearing other artists' step by steps process on here!

    I used to only really do straight canvas & paper, but I have been inspired by many artists I visit here & I love everything from heavily textured canvases, collage & mixed media, to the stark white boards with graphic powerful images, by seeing others I have been encouraged to experiment, well at least taken a few bold steps that I never would have taken without the wonderful jumble of styles & results that just make me feel it's good to step outside your previous constraints :)
    Thank You both for getting PPF off the ground!
    Also Poll wise... mmm I'm always interested in other peoples 'favourites' maybe fav artist's (I love Francis Bacon, actually I love heaps & heaps LOL), Fav movies or places that inspire? Fav quotes that may inspire or get the muse to respond? It's all great, I find each week the polls fun, a great way to start off the blog rounds & get us thinking :)

    I love the poles and getting new ideas from all the artists here! For me I just draw the design in pencil on the watercolor paper, then start right in painting. Watercolors so far are my only medium, although I would like to branch out more after seeing the wonderful variety here! Thanks Eva and Kristin for bringing us this party every week! Deb

    How do I prepare a surface, well there's always gesso but it all depends upon the surface. Thanks to Kristin and Eva as always for hosting! :-)

    It's informative to read of other artists' methods of painting. When I did oils I just used the already primed canvas. I am now doing watercolors so I don't add anything to the paper but water and paint. Faye

    gesso for me but all the wonderful inspiration has encouraged me to try new and much more exciting things, painting on maps is onne and the use of old books and painting over thewritten word is really something i like.

    my painting process is intuitive..I am drawn to just using paint ....and gesso. I usually tint the backdrop with white gesso mixed with a color I am drawn to...from there a face or figure appears and i just start painting, creating and playing and having fun..thats it! each painting truly teaches me new things!

    Hi everyone - I am primarily a watercolor artist so I usually paint on bare 140lb watercolor paper. There are many brands out there but I prefer the Windsor Newton Cold Press. Occasionally I will apply a coat of gesso first - or several if I am covering up an old painting I don't like - which creates a slick surface and gives a totally different painting experience with the wateroclors.     Hi, I like to paint on plain wood. Just love it! When it comes to canvases, I haven't done much, but if, I get the pre-primed ones so I don't have to worry about that anymore.

    And, it's great to be back. Hopefully I will be able to keep up with PPF from now on! Have a great weekend everyone!

    i like using watercolor paper, most often arches block, so priming isnt necessary- however
    i like to start to out with a layer of wax pastel near, if not the first layer, I really love how it shines through the acrylic glazes and collage that follows

    Happy PPF!! I am so happy to be back after missing this party for the past few weeks!! Sometimes I start with a layer of collage but for some pieces its just a layer of gesso.

    I like already primed canvas. Very often I do a first layer of torn paper, book pages, letters, sheet music... you name it. Then I start painting on top of it, sometimes just a glaze. And very often it goes a totally different way than I had envisioned.

    I like hot pressed paper to work on... that shiny hard white surface is just perfect and it takes so much abuse... as to the canvas. I just give them a sand and a light coat of gesso and then another sand... actually that sound s like a lot of work, but it only takes minutes then I have a much smoother surface xx

    I have used wood with gesso, collage papers, painted bright underpaintings (those are fun). I try a lot of methods because I'm impulsive but use pre-primed as well because I'm impatient!

    Hello, this is great fun! I will paint on anything! I do oils and pastels. I usually tint my canvas just before painting. I try to use a warm color underneath if most of my subject is cool, and visa-versa if the subject is warmer, I put the cool compliment underneath. I like gessoed board, also and have painted oil on sanded pastel paper in a crunch!

    Although at times I may use any kind of background I paint most of my popjes on plain paper 130lb. I like the contrast of white and bright colours. This is great fun thanks!!!
